Spoken Word

What is Spoken Word?

Spoken word is poetry brought to life. It's about using the power of words and performance to share stories, express feelings, and deliver messages that matter.

Why I Started Spoken Word and What It Means to Me

I was drawn to spoken word as a powerful medium to voice thoughts, challenge norms, and share stories that might otherwise go unheard. To me, spoken word is not just an art form; it's a vehicle for personal truth and societal reflection. It allows me to connect with others on a profoundly emotional level, offering a space to explore the complexities of life and human experience.

How Spoken Word Can Be Used for Impact

Spoken word is a potent tool for impact. It can:

Educate and Inform

By weaving important messages into engaging performances, spoken word can highlight social issues, spread knowledge, and inspire change.

Empower and Motivate

This art form empowers both the speaker and the listener, encouraging self-expression and bolstering confidence.

Heal and Support:

Through its deeply emotional and personal nature, spoken word can offer solace and understanding, helping individuals process their feelings and experiences.

In essence, spoken word is more than just entertainment; it's a meaningful expression that can motivate, transform, and heal. Whether addressing a crowd or speaking to one person, the impact of spoken word is profound and lasting.

In July 2023, I worked with an organisation Poetry Luv and the Science Gallery to produce a live, spoken word performance based on the theme, “A.I Who’s Looking After Me”.

Led by the inspirational Jaja Soze, I attended five workshops over three months, alongside other spoken word poets and university students studying Artificial Intelligence, to learn about the benefits and drawbacks of A.I.’s evolution.

Across the workshops, we held collaborative writing sessions with other spoken word poets and university students, exploring different themes of the spoken word piece and practicing the live performance.

We performed the collective spoken word piece in front of 100 attendees at the Science Gallery, with guest performers from respected spoken word poets such as Big Scoop.

The spoken word piece was warmly received by the Science Gallery and I was subsequently selected to work with the Science Gallery’s Change Collective Group, to work with other creatives to discuss how we can create institutional change within the Science Gallery and the wider community.
